Last year the YMCA decided to give the kids in their local "after school" program a pedometer to wear for a few days to evaluate how active kids are in their lives. My grandson was in the program and he turned in his pedometer only to discover that on an average day he walked 4,000 steps. That surprised me because it seemed he went to school, sat in classes, ate in cafeteria, came home, ate dinner with family; homework and then to bed (with a little computer time built into his schedule).

I learned that a study had conducted to determine if pedometers are a successful way of encouraging young people to get active.

Prior to the study little was known about young people and the effects that a pedometer would have on the physical activity.. We know the impact of a pedometer on adults when their physical activity was increased about 2,000 steps per day which means decreased body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure levels. It is great for adults and now has been proven it is great for kids as well.

People are mostly created by their accomplishments in life. Wearing a pedometer and measuring their walking steps produces an achievement in people's lives. I proudly wear a pedometer every day and close to the end of the day I check my walking steps. If I have not reached my goal of 7,000 steps a day I go for a walk until I achieve that level.

Put a pedometer on your kid and tell them it is for a healthy report, which it is. Make a chart for the kids, or yourself, to fill in a daily blank space that you fill in with their steps to evaluate the end results. Most parents have a need to know if their kids are being active enough to have a healthy life.

Pedometers are able to provide up-to-the-minute information which can be used to adjust activity plans to achieve physical activity objectives.

Some kids participate in organized sports and activities and have remained relatively stable over time; incidental activity has been eroded from the lives of many young people. They also consume too much soft drink and junk food, and don't eat enough fruit and vegetables.

Unlike chicken pox, polio, and even the common cold, obesity is not spread by germs in the air or by shaking hands with an obese person. Although the number of overweight and obese people in the United States keeps rising (the last numbers I heard were around 60% of adults and 25% of children), obesity can't be cured by a vaccine. Washing your hands more often won't help keep you slim and trim.

We've all heard a lot of news recently about the bird flu, and the possibility of a world-wide pandemic. A pandemic could kill millions of people around the world in a very short time. Obesity can also be a killer, but may involve a much slower and more painful death.

Children who are obese are now developing diseases which, in the past, were only seen in adults. Type II diabetes was formerly called adult-onset diabetes, because it was rarely seen in children. It is now frequently being diagnosed in children under the age of 10. Type II diabetes can cause very serious health problems, including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, amputation of limbs, and much more. Parents who wouldn't dream of starting the car unless their children were buckled securely in their car seats are turning a blind eye to their children's potential health problems caused by poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles.

What is the answer? Children don't need temporary diets. Their bones and muscles are growing rapidly, and they need good nutrition to ensure proper growth. The best solution is a lifestyle change.

Start by restricting the time your children watch TV or play video games. Most pediatricians recommend no more than 2 hours a day of screen time (except for homework done on the computer). Will your children be angry at you? Probably, at least for the first few days, but they'll get over it! Remind them that you love them, and loving them means that you will sometimes have to make decisions based on what is best for them and not necessarily what they prefer. Use some of the time that they now spend watching TV for family activities involving physical activity. Play ball in the yard or park, romp with the dog, fly a kite, take a walk or bike ride after dinner. Take turns picking the activity for the day.

Eat more meals at home and limit fast food or pizza delivery to one or two times a week. Make your pizzas veggie pizzas with thin crust, and skip the extra cheese. Stop buying sodas for home use, and drink water, fat-free milk, or unsweetened iced tea. Instead of snacking on chips, cookies, and ice cream, stock up on fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, and nuts. Make sugar-free gelatin with fresh fruit, and top with fat-free frozen whipped topping. Spread low-fat plain yogurt on a chocolate graham cracker, add another cracker to make a sandwich, and freeze. The result is a healthier "ice-cream sandwich". Look for other low-calorie snacks in magazines or online recipe sites.

If you need help planning well-balanced meals, look for programs or websites that offer menus based on the USDA Food Pyramid, or consult with a registered dietician if your family has food allergies or medical conditions that restrict certain food groups.

If your child is overweight, his primary concern may be physical appearance. That is important too, because his self-esteem and confidence may suffer because of teasing or bullying by other children.

Assure him that you want to help, and that changing his lifestyle will improve his appearance and confidence at the same time it improves his health.

Most people only focus on one thing when it comes to fitness, their weight. And why not, scales are everywhere. They are accessible and acceptable. However, because weight can fluctuate vastly for a variety of reasons, it is not your best predictor of fitness or progress.

Weight can be an arbitrary number when it comes to overall fitness. It does not take into account your healthy muscle, body frame or cardiovascular health. You can be overfat and fit, just as you can be at an ideal weight and unfit.

Even worse is the BMI or body mass index. This is a number derived from your height and weight, giving you an overall number that represents your total body mass. It has the same flaws as using only your weight as a guide. A muscular body builder with only 10 percent body fat would fall into the obese range because his "mass" is greater than the recommended 25. Even though it is healthy mass, the BMI scale does not take that into account.

We need to begin to look beyond the scale, height/weight charts and BMI to determine actual fitness. It is your fitness level, not your weight that most directly affects your functional health status. Being slightly overfat with a healthy lifestyle is preferable to being at a normal weight and having unhealthy habits. With that said, being overfat has its own issues such as increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, joint problems and a whole host of other issues.

Society and the media sell people on the idea that they must be skinny and have abs of steel in order to be fit. This unrealistic standard causes many people to take the wrong approach, in an attempt to achieve what may not even be possible.

It is time to empower REAL people with helpful tools to better gauge their actual fitness. I fully believe that if people took a more active role in monitoring their fitness, along with adopting a more realistic goal, they would begin to enjoy the process of maintaining health. So let's look at five more beneficial ways to monitor your fitness:

1. Body fat to muscle ratio analysis
2. Heart rate monitoring
3. Pedometers & timed distances
4. Waist to hip ratio & measurements
5. Continuous body-monitoring products

In part II, I will discuss ways two through five, but in this lesson I will focus on option number one, which is a top-notch way for regular people to gauge fitness progress. No matter what your weight says, your goal should be to lose body fat and increase your lean muscle. With this approach your weight takes care of itself.

Many of those I work with have a higher fat percentage than muscle percentage. This is a huge problem. When they finally reach their tipping point, where muscle is greater than fat, they feel a major sense of accomplishment, one that fuels their ongoing efforts. This analysis of fat to muscle ratio allows them to see the actual fruits of their labor.

But measuring that would be too complicated right? Not necessarily, there are many ways you can learn your fat to muscle ratio. The Gold standard is underwater measurement. Not many people I know would be able to opt for this method. Another method is using body calipers to gauge body fat. This is a fairly accurate measure depending on the skill of the tester, so this option is also less appealing. The easiest way is through a method called bio-impedance.

Body impedance is measured when a safe electrical signal is passed through the body using the hands, feet or both. The user feels nothing. The impedance is greatest in the fat tissues, which contains 10-20% water, while the mass without fat, contains 70-75% water. This low water content allows the signal to pass more easily through the fatty areas.

By using the impedance measurements along with other factors such as a person's height and weight, gender and age it is possible to calculate the percentage of body fat, fat-free mass or muscle, hydration level, and other body composition values.

This is a simple way to track your fitness and it provides a much better indication than weight alone. These devices can be found in some scales, and in body composition analysis machines, which can be hand-held, step-on, or hand/foot combination devises. In comparison tests, their measurements were quite comparable and proved to be accurate in most users.

Those with pedometers increased their steps by about 2100 per day, or 20 minutes of steady walking, a 30% increase in daily steps. They walked almost twice as many blocks as those without pedometers. People using a pedometer also tend to stick much longer with a walking routine.

To get the most out of your pedometer, set daily and weekly goals. Start by setting a baseline number of steps. To do this, simply wear the pedometer for a few days. Don't try to aim for a certain number of steps. All you are doing at this point is measuring how many steps you take in a normal day. Calculate the average number of steps you take any given day. Next you want to start taking 500 to 1000 steps each day. You can easily accomplish this by taking a little walk around the block, parking a little further away during errand and at work, as well as walking to a college's office instead of calling him or her. Each week, or every two weeks increase your steps and additional 500 to 1000 steps until you reach a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. If you are walking to lose weight, work yourself up to 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day.

Exercising While Using Pedometers

A pedometer, also called a step counter, is a valuable product for counting steps and can help with your exercise program. It counts the steps by detecting the action of your hips. In order to attain an accurate measurement of your steps used, you will want to measure your step span.

Step Length: The length from the heel print of one foot to the heel print of the other foot. This is the distance traveled forward by a single leg.

Pedometers

Stride Length: This can represent the same thing as step length, or it can represent two steps, since in that instance the other foot has also touched down once. If you set your pedometer for your step length and learn it seems to be halving your distance, read the instructions again - it may want the stride length, which is two steps.

The pedometer was initially produced for sports buffs but has become accepted as a method to record regular exercise. It is often worn on the belt and kept on all day. A great way to get fit is to work up to 10,000 steps a day which is the equivalent of five miles. For a healthy and productive lifestyle the pedometer just might be the appropriate device to help you keep track with your fitness regimen.

All pedometers count steps, but they may use different methods to do so beyond showing the step total and/or calculating the distance. The top features are: calorie estimates, clocks, timers, stopwatches and speed estimators, 7-day memory and pulse rate readers.

If you are planning to wear a pedometer all day, make sure it is securely attached at the waist and will be comfortable to wear. Also, you need to make sure that the display is easy to read and that you don't actually have to remove the device from your waistband. The pedometers that have a cover are the best because the buttons are protected and it is less likely that they may get pushed accidentally. You don't want to lose your over all total number of steps before the end of the day!

The most basic pedometers only count your steps and show and/or distance. This is all you need to track and keep yourself committed. Set a goal of distance or steps for each day. The recommended number of steps is 6,000 for health, 10,000 for weight loss when you count all your steps during the day. For weight loss, an uninterrupted walk each day of 4,000-6,000 steps is advised.
